What's Next?
As a future educator, I plan to never stop learning or researching within my field. Currently, I have been offered a building substitute position at Holden Elementary. During this time I plan to strengthen my skills as a teacher, by interacting with as many students and grade levels as I can. Substituting will also allow me a chance to see how fellow teachers set up and structure their classrooms. I plan on using this experience to help find my own school and classroom. I will be certified to teach in K-5 classrooms as well as 6-8 mathematics classrooms. Currently, I feel my heart is in lower elementary, but one can never tell what the future holds.
Current Areas of Improvement
Advocacy to Meet the Needs of Learners
My goal is to be more informed on how to recognize the needs of my learners as well as meet them. Even though I met the expectations in this category during my final evaluation, it’s still an area that I feel strongly about and would like to continue to show growth. In the future, I plan to research what the protocol is for the school district that I will be working in regarding seeking out services for students. My first step would be to document everything that I observe in my classroom. I would research strategies that would be beneficial to the students while they are in my room. After that, I would follow the protocol set forth by the school district. I plan to also research the best methods to start that often difficult conversation with parents and caregivers.
Assessment of P-12 Learning
My goal is to provide students with an authentic assessment that are culturally relevant to them as well as allowing learners of all abilities to show competence. I will focus on providing students with assessments that are designed for them and to not always rely on what is found in curriculum resources. I also would like to provide an assessment that are not just tests and worksheets, but projects as well. This is something that looking back I regret not doing so during my student teaching experience. I would be mindful to align all assessments to the standards that are power standards for my state, school district as well as grade.
Data-Guided Instructions
My goal is to create pre-assessment that truly assesses what I need my students to know and base the course of my instruction off of that data. I plan to research what the chosen power-standards are for the school district and grade that I will work in. I plan to either seek out pre-assessments that test for understanding in those areas or create one of my own. I plan to in the future track the data gathered from assessments digitally and look for patterns within my classroom. I would group my students according to skill level when it’s beneficial to them based on the data. I would continue to monitor and track the data for my students throughout the year and plan according to their needs.
